25. Recap – Reading , Maths

This week has been very busy because we had many tasks to complete, and we needed to practice our reading and math. Our teacher introduced my class and me to a website with reading stories and math equations. We had to read the stories, solve the math questions, and then select the answer we thought was correct. After choosing an answer, we could scroll down to check if we got it right.

For the math, you need to go to our class website and then click on the math section. Scroll down until you see “Year 8” and click on it. You will see a small paper icon this is the math quiz we had to do. There are different levels like A, B, C, and D. You can pick the one you want to do. At the end of the page, there is a small hint to help you solve the questions.

25. GamePlan AKL – Explanation Writing.

Kia Ora Reader,

Today I will be blogging about our Explanation Writing we got given on Monday, We got given a task to do on Monday which was that we had to write about our self’s and why should you get choosed for the GamePlan AKL, ( This GamePlan AKL is actually a scholarship ), So we had to write about our selfs and why do you think you should get selected and also why would the scholarship help us in life.

This  week the Years 8 from Room 10 and 9 has been given a task, and in the task we had to write a Scholarship application, about ourselves and why we be selected for GamePlan AKL Scholarship. From what I understand is that the best answers and writing piece will get their Writing Assessment sent to the GamePlan AKL, and they will be the one who will be receiving the scholarship. In the Writing Assessment we had to explain (not persuade, but explain.) Explain the reason why we should get the scholarship and also how this scholarship could help us, from what I have learnt from this Writing Assessment is that we should be grateful for what we receive and to always mean what we write inside the writing piece.

Here’s my explaining why I should be selected. 

I believe I should be selected for the GamePlan Akl 2025 programme because I am eager to learn, grow and prepare myself for the future  as I transition from intermediate school to high school next year. Being a proud Niuean and Cook Islander, I carry the strength and values of my culture and family with me. 

 I come from a big family with 10 siblings, and I want to be a great older sister who supports and inspires them. I believe being part of the GamePlan programme will help me develop teamwork, leadership, and communication skills that will benefit me in sports and in life. I have big dreams of becoming a doctor one day, and I know that learning discipline and working well with others will help me reach that goal. 

In my free time, I love spending time with my family and friends, and I also take time to remember and honor my papa who passed away before I was born. This programme would be a great opportunity for me to challenge myself, gain confidence, and prepare for college and beyond. I am ready to work hard, learn from others, and make the most of this experience to become the best version of myself.

25. Why should the learder’s go to camp.

Happy Tongan Language Week!

Hey everyone! I want to tell you why I think Year 7 and 8 students should go to sports camp. It’s not just about playing games all day it’s so much more than that!

At sports camp, we get to learn how to work as a team. This means we have to talk to each other, help each other out, and work together to do our best. These are skills we can use not just at school but anywhere! Plus, sports camp is a great way to meet new people from other schools. We can make new friends and learn how different people think and do things.

As a leader at Edmund Hillary School, I really believe we should go to sports camp. It’s a cool chance to meet students from other places and have fun with them. When we play sports together, we learn how to work with people we don’t usually hang out with. This helps us become better team players and leaders.

Going to camp also helps leaders understand what it’s like to be part of the activities. We get to try new things, make new friends, and learn how to support others. It’s a fun way to build friendships and teamwork that go beyond just our own school.

Overall, sports camp is an awesome experience. It helps us have fun, meet new friends, and become better leaders and team members. I think every Year 7 and 8 student should definitely give it a go!

25. Kiwi Can – Recap.

Happy Tongan Language Week!

Today, I want to share my experience with Kiwi Can, a program we have at school that helps us learn important values and skills through fun games and activities. Two weeks ago, we had a lesson with our Kiwi Can leaders, and it was really cool because we got to play games that helped us understand emotions better. Our theme for the term is understanding emotions, which I think is really important because knowing how to recognize and express feelings can help us get along with others.

The first game we played was called Guess the Emotions. We stood in lines, and one person from each line would come up and act out an emotion that the Kiwi Can leaders told them. The rest of the line had to guess which emotion it was. The first group to guess correctly got a point. It was really fun because some of the emotions were easy to guess, but others were tricky and made us think about how people show their feelings. I learned that sometimes people don’t say how they feel with words, but their body language can tell us a lot.

After playing that game for a few rounds, we answered some questions from the leaders about the emotions and about Tongan Language Week. It was nice to hear some facts about our culture and language because it made me feel proud to be part of this special week.

The last game was more like a mini drama. We stayed in our lines and had to act out a short story in front of the class. My line acted out a situation where we had a math test coming up. Everyone studied except one friend who didn’t feel prepared. We showed how we supported her by saying, “Don’t worry, I will help you.” This game helped me realize how important it is to support each other, especially when someone is struggling. It also reminded me that kindness and teamwork can make a big difference.

Overall, Kiwi Can lessons are really fun and teach us valuable lessons about emotions and how to be good friends and classmates. I’m excited for more lessons this term and learning even more about myself and others.

25. Electrical Engineering

Over the past five weeks, the Year 7 and 8 students at Edmund Hillary School have been exploring different types of engineering, like Chemical, Electrical, Mechanical, and more. Each week, we get to learn about a new branch of engineering and try out activities that help us understand what engineers actually do. Last week, we focused on Environmental Engineering, which was all about how engineers work to protect the environment and find ways to make the world a cleaner and safer place. This week, we switched gears to Electrical Engineering, learning how electricity can be used to power devices and create useful tools.

To kick off this week’s lesson, we did a warm up activity that really got us thinking as a team. We split into groups of 8 to 10, and each group was given a ball. The challenge was to pass the ball safely from one person to the next, but here’s the catch: we weren’t allowed to use the same body part twice to pass it. So, if someone used their hand to pass the ball, the next person couldn’t use their hand again they had to use a different body part like their elbow or knee. It was kind of like a human domino effect! This made the challenge way more interesting and forced us to be creative and communicate well with each other. It was a fun way to warm up and reminded us how important teamwork and problem solving are in engineering.

After the warm up, we moved on to a hands on activity where we got to build a simple LED circuit. We were given batteries, wires, LEDs, and tape, and our goal was to connect everything properly so the LED would light up. At first, it was a bit confusing because we had to make sure the wires were connected in the right way and that the tape didn’t cover parts that needed to make contact. If the tape was in the wrong spot, the electricity wouldn’t flow and the LED wouldn’t turn on. We had to try different ways of taping and connecting the wires until the circuit worked. When the LED finally lit up, it was really exciting because we could actually see electricity in action! This activity helped us understand how circuits work and why engineers need to be careful and precise when building electrical devices. It also showed us how trial and error is part of the engineering process, which made me realise that even when things don’t work at first, you just have to keep trying and adjusting.

Overall, these lessons have been really cool because they give us a chance to learn about different careers while doing fun, practical activities. It’s one thing to read about engineering in a book, but it’s way more interesting to actually build things and solve problems with your friends. I’m looking forward to the next lessons and finding out what other types of engineering we’ll get to explore!

25. Learning About Legends and Math, : My Weekly Blog Post

Value of the Week – Manaakitanga
Manaakitanga means looking after others beyond ourselves and also means showing consideration and respect for others.

Today I will be bloging about the work I have been doing for the past week.  For our Reading we had to read and find some facts about Sir Edmund Hillary, Matariki, Sir Bom Gillies and lastly Maurice Gee, Once we had some facts about him we had to write about them we had to a DLO about Them. Then for math we have been  doing Prime numbers, Compostise numbers and divisiblity, Page 91 to 95.

My thoughts about the Reading and Wirting –  I thought That the finding facts would be really easy and quick but it was hard to find facts that made sense. And the hardest part of the reading part was finding true facts about them.  Writing –  The part I Thought was really hard about doing a DLO about them was trying to finish all in 20 miuntes

 Math –  we have been doing Prime numbers and Compostise Numbers and divisibity, which is 91 to 95.  We have been doing this Prime numbers and Compostise Numbers and divisibity for the past for week or two.

My thoughts about the Math – I thought I couldn’t do the maths because in the book it looked really hard, I asked one of my friend’s if she understand’s the math, then we were talking about the math and she was making sure I got the math.  I lreant more about Compostise and prime number’s. One of the task in the book were about compostise and prime number’s. I had to circle the number’s that were a composite or a prime. Like  105,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12 ? What do you think ? Do you think it’s a Compostise or prime Number ?.

Fear, Fire, and Friendship: My Learning Journey Beyond the Lines

If you’re not familiar with the topic I’m blogging about, please take a look at my other blog post regarding the RECAP.

Today I will be blogging about what I have been doing for the past week. In this blog post, I will include reading, maths, and lastly, writing.

Reading – For reading I have been writing about Beyond the Lines, which is a video on YouTube, and it’s about the world war. In the video there were two kids that were in the world war. Our goal was to act like we were a part of the war. The video is also about the Māori Battalion. Beyond the Line – Video

Writing – For writing, we had to write a piece of descriptive writing that was about the beyond the lines. We had to act like we were in the war and try to make the writing emotional and descriptive. 25. Maori Battalion – Beyond the lines Danielle

The front line was full of people running on the battlefield and taking shelter.  They went from running out of the battleship to hiding behind objects. As I was hiding behind the objects, the bombshells kept going off. As the bombshells were going off, which terrified the kids. As they hid, they got showers of pieces of paper that soldiers had written for our loved ones.

The feeling inside of me I felt fear as I watched soldiers fall on the ground. As I watched them fall on the group, I slowly crawled to the other side of the trenches where there were televisions, pillows and pencils scattered around the field. The faces were covered with paper as their faces started to fall apart every time they got shot from the back of their backs.

I felt afraid and frightened by all the gunfire surrounding me. Watching others not make it only made my fear worse; I thought I might not make it either. As I crawled toward my grandpa, terror filled me. A soldier was hiding behind me, and I was scared he might get me caught. When I finally reached my grandpa, he looked just as terrified as I felt. I wiggled closer to him, but before I could feel safe, he had to move on to the next trench.

I dropped to the ground, trembling, and began crawling through the dirt and smoke, my hands scraping against rocks and debris. My eyes stung with tears and dust, but I had to get to my grandpa. I could see him just ahead, but every inch felt like a mile. The closer I got, the more terrified I became. There was a soldier crouched behind me, trying to hide, and I was scared he’d give away my position or that we’d both be caught in the next round of fire.

That’s the end of Beyond The Lines.

We have also been doing some of Ben’s work. If you don’t know who that is, that is my other teacher. We had to do our passion projects and do our Castle on the Cliff Chapter 2. We had to act like we were in the story and write a descriptive writing about it. Castle on a Cliff

Matiu lifts his torch for better vision as he shoves his way through the packed manor.

As they walked into the dark castle, they could see nothing at all, but then Matiu lifted his torch for a better vision to see what was around him. As they were walking through, they could hear movement in the castle. Then Tama turned wide-eyed to the others, saying, Did you hear that? Asking the others, Matiu and the others were frightened by all the noises that were going on in the castle, and Tama was saying, ‘It’s okay, come on,’ to the others. They were worried because something might happen to them, but Tama said, ‘Don’t be a chicken.’ They all laughed; they still felt frightened, but they were starting to get over it because Tama was telling them everything will be okay.

But was everything okay? It turns out the longer the walk down into the castle, as Tama was in the front of the group and everyone else was behind him as he was leading them into the castle.   As they continued walking in the castle, Matiu and Isla could hear movement and someone standing on leaves. When they heard that, Matiu and Isla got the chills. Then they were worried, and they wanted to go back out of the castle, but Tama was really interested in going deeper into the dark castle. As they walked, they stopped at something covered in leaves. Matiu noticed it and said, What is that?? Tama really wanted to go see what it was, so he went up to have a look, not knowing it would be dangerous because what was in the leaves was a dead person. It left everyone in shock and anxious. Then that’s when they decided to leave the castle, but as they turned around, they were running for their lives because they thought someone was going to chase them. Once they got out, they were happy that they weren’t in the castle anymore.

Math – For amt we always do our pre-tests and our post-tests. We’ve been working from Mathematics and Statistics / Oxford / Year 8. We have been working on unit 6: Topic 1, which is about measurement. The page is 120 to 124. I thought that the math I have would be really hard; well, I mean, it is a little bit, but my peers gave me help that really helped me out with math.

Reading
I have been reading about the Māori Battalion. The Māori Battalion is about young people back in the 1900s going into World War.
The 28th Māori Battalion was a group of brave Māori soldiers who fought in World War II. It was like a special army unit within New Zealand. They were known for their courage and helped New Zealand with the war effort, both at home and overseas.
It was like a team of heroes who were strong and fought for their country. We also had to make a DLO about the Māori Battalion.

Maths
I have been doing fractions, decimals, and lastly percentages.
We’ve been continuing the same maths from last week, which includes prisms and nets — that’s in my other post from last week.
We’ve been working from Mathematics and Statistics / Oxford / Year 8. We also did our pre-tests and post-tests. That’s what we’ve been doing for the past few weeks. We are now moving onto fractions, percentages, and decimals.


Writing
For writing, I have been doing Current Events. This is where you read Kiwi Kids News, which has news stories from around the world.
We can choose one we really want to do, but it has to be one of these: World, Sport, Odd Stuff, or National.

For the past two weeks, we’ve been creating a newspaper. We had to write about the news we picked from Kiwi Kids News. We were expected to write four pieces of writing on one page, but I couldn’t fit all four onto one page — it was too much!
So I wrote two pieces for my newspaper. We also had to come up with a name for our newspaper, and mine is called Main News.

25.Recrap Week one – Term 2

  • By the way this is from last week, I just haven’t got a lot of time to do it.

 

Today I will be blogging about the stuff we have been doing, School has started for term 2, These are some of thne stuff we have been doing for term 2 – week 1.

Value of the Week . 

Whanaungatanga means, Family, and Supporting each other.

We had to make a sidle show only using photos no writing just photo of what you did during the hoildays we had to start it on monday. The first step was to make six sildes for all the photos you have to add into all the sidles, The next step was to Only use photo’s and no bullet points !, also you have to use photo is match what you are saying. Then you will have to talk on each silde for 20 seconds, and you must speak on each silde and no skipping and that was some of the rules we got given to us to remember what we had to do for the, My hoilday assessment. And when you talk about it to the class, they kinda have to guess what your hoilday assessment.

Math

  •  I didnt get was the prims and net’s I was stuck on that for a little bit untill my friends helped me out, by explaning it to me a little bit more.  Topic 10 : Topic 1, Which is Data Sources.  Page  157 – 162.

Today we have been doing math in our math’s book’s and what have we did  during the week ?, We have been doing our math from unit 10, Topic 1. Which is  from a book that is called the Mathematics and Statistics / OXFORD / Year 8.  Wheae Lorraine will give you a unit and a topic from the book but most of them are from our pre – Test, Most of them are the one’s we dont get or got wrong from the text.  But thats what we have been doing for the past week.
