25. Kiwi Can – Recap.

Malo e Lelei Reader,

Happy Tongan Language Week!

Today, I want to share my experience with Kiwi Can, a program we have at school that helps us learn important values and skills through fun games and activities. Two weeks ago, we had a lesson with our Kiwi Can leaders, and it was really cool because we got to play games that helped us understand emotions better. Our theme for the term is understanding emotions, which I think is really important because knowing how to recognize and express feelings can help us get along with others.

The first game we played was called Guess the Emotions. We stood in lines, and one person from each line would come up and act out an emotion that the Kiwi Can leaders told them. The rest of the line had to guess which emotion it was. The first group to guess correctly got a point. It was really fun because some of the emotions were easy to guess, but others were tricky and made us think about how people show their feelings. I learned that sometimes people don’t say how they feel with words, but their body language can tell us a lot.

After playing that game for a few rounds, we answered some questions from the leaders about the emotions and about Tongan Language Week. It was nice to hear some facts about our culture and language because it made me feel proud to be part of this special week.

The last game was more like a mini drama. We stayed in our lines and had to act out a short story in front of the class. My line acted out a situation where we had a math test coming up. Everyone studied except one friend who didn’t feel prepared. We showed how we supported her by saying, “Don’t worry, I will help you.” This game helped me realize how important it is to support each other, especially when someone is struggling. It also reminded me that kindness and teamwork can make a big difference.

Overall, Kiwi Can lessons are really fun and teach us valuable lessons about emotions and how to be good friends and classmates. I’m excited for more lessons this term and learning even more about myself and others.

Fear, Fire, and Friendship: My Learning Journey Beyond the Lines

Fakaalofa Lahi Atu Reader,

If you’re not familiar with the topic I’m blogging about, please take a look at my other blog post regarding the RECAP.

Today I will be blogging about what I have been doing for the past week. In this blog post, I will include reading, maths, and lastly, writing.

Reading – For reading I have been writing about Beyond the Lines, which is a video on YouTube, and it’s about the world war. In the video there were two kids that were in the world war. Our goal was to act like we were a part of the war. The video is also about the Māori Battalion. Beyond the Line – Video

Writing – For writing, we had to write a piece of descriptive writing that was about the beyond the lines. We had to act like we were in the war and try to make the writing emotional and descriptive. 25. Maori Battalion – Beyond the lines Danielle

The front line was full of people running on the battlefield and taking shelter.  They went from running out of the battleship to hiding behind objects. As I was hiding behind the objects, the bombshells kept going off. As the bombshells were going off, which terrified the kids. As they hid, they got showers of pieces of paper that soldiers had written for our loved ones.

The feeling inside of me I felt fear as I watched soldiers fall on the ground. As I watched them fall on the group, I slowly crawled to the other side of the trenches where there were televisions, pillows and pencils scattered around the field. The faces were covered with paper as their faces started to fall apart every time they got shot from the back of their backs.

I felt afraid and frightened by all the gunfire surrounding me. Watching others not make it only made my fear worse; I thought I might not make it either. As I crawled toward my grandpa, terror filled me. A soldier was hiding behind me, and I was scared he might get me caught. When I finally reached my grandpa, he looked just as terrified as I felt. I wiggled closer to him, but before I could feel safe, he had to move on to the next trench.

I dropped to the ground, trembling, and began crawling through the dirt and smoke, my hands scraping against rocks and debris. My eyes stung with tears and dust, but I had to get to my grandpa. I could see him just ahead, but every inch felt like a mile. The closer I got, the more terrified I became. There was a soldier crouched behind me, trying to hide, and I was scared he’d give away my position or that we’d both be caught in the next round of fire.

That’s the end of Beyond The Lines.

We have also been doing some of Ben’s work. If you don’t know who that is, that is my other teacher. We had to do our passion projects and do our Castle on the Cliff Chapter 2. We had to act like we were in the story and write a descriptive writing about it. Castle on a Cliff

Matiu lifts his torch for better vision as he shoves his way through the packed manor.

As they walked into the dark castle, they could see nothing at all, but then Matiu lifted his torch for a better vision to see what was around him. As they were walking through, they could hear movement in the castle. Then Tama turned wide-eyed to the others, saying, Did you hear that? Asking the others, Matiu and the others were frightened by all the noises that were going on in the castle, and Tama was saying, ‘It’s okay, come on,’ to the others. They were worried because something might happen to them, but Tama said, ‘Don’t be a chicken.’ They all laughed; they still felt frightened, but they were starting to get over it because Tama was telling them everything will be okay.

But was everything okay? It turns out the longer the walk down into the castle, as Tama was in the front of the group and everyone else was behind him as he was leading them into the castle.   As they continued walking in the castle, Matiu and Isla could hear movement and someone standing on leaves. When they heard that, Matiu and Isla got the chills. Then they were worried, and they wanted to go back out of the castle, but Tama was really interested in going deeper into the dark castle. As they walked, they stopped at something covered in leaves. Matiu noticed it and said, What is that?? Tama really wanted to go see what it was, so he went up to have a look, not knowing it would be dangerous because what was in the leaves was a dead person. It left everyone in shock and anxious. Then that’s when they decided to leave the castle, but as they turned around, they were running for their lives because they thought someone was going to chase them. Once they got out, they were happy that they weren’t in the castle anymore.

Stay tuned for chapter 3.

Math – For amt we always do our pre-tests and our post-tests. We’ve been working from Mathematics and Statistics / Oxford / Year 8. We have been working on unit 6: Topic 1, which is about measurement. The page is 120 to 124. I thought that the math I have would be really hard; well, I mean, it is a little bit, but my peers gave me help that really helped me out with math.

25. Week 4 – Recap !

Fakaalofa lahi atu, reader!

If you don’t know what I am blogging about, go read my other blog post about the RECAP.

Value of the Week – Manaakitanga
Manaakitanga means looking after others beyond ourselves, and also showing consideration and respect for others.

Today I will be blogging about what I have been doing for the past week. In this blog post, I will include Reading, Maths, and lastly, Writing.

Reading
I have been reading about the Māori Battalion. The Māori Battalion is about young people back in the 1900s going into World War.

The 28th Māori Battalion was a group of brave Māori soldiers who fought in World War II — like a special army unit within New Zealand. They were known for their courage and helped New Zealand with the war effort, both at home and overseas.

It was like a team of heroes who were strong and fought for their country. We also had to make a DLO about the Māori Battalion.

Maths
I have been working on fractions, decimals, and percentages. For the past week, we have been doing fractions, decimals, and percentages. We have been continuing the same maths as last week, which includes prisms and nets — this is in my other post from last week.

We have been using Mathematics and Statistics / Oxford / Year 8. We have also been doing our pre-tests and post-tests. That’s what we have been working on for the past few weeks.

We now have a new unit and topic, which is Unit 3, Topic 2. This unit is about fractions, percentages, and decimals.

Writing
For writing, I have been doing Current Events, which means reading Kiwi Kids News that has news stories from around the world. We can choose one we really want to do, but it has to be one of these categories: World, Sport, Odd Stuff, or National.

For the past two weeks, we have been writing a newspaper that includes all the news we picked from Kiwi Kids News. We had to write about each news story we chose. We were asked to write four pieces on one whole page — it only had to be one page.

But I couldn’t fit all four pieces on the page because it was too much, so I wrote two pieces for the newspaper. We also had to come up with a name for our newspaper, and mine is called Main News.
